Ahh, Thai food, I love it. What I love more is excellent customer service.
So, when Thai food and exceptional customer service go hand in hand it is like a match made in heaven…to me.
My two favourite restaurants couldn’t be further apart if they tried. The first is in Australia and I will go out on a limb here and say that Australia has many wonderful qualities but it is not known for its customer service which is why I am even more excited when I find quality service.
What makes this restaurant special (besides the food) is just that, the service. By service I mean, the staff remembers your name and food preferences. They chat with you like they have all the time in the world, even when the place is bustling. Just that two seconds that they take to ask how you are is what makes you feel special. It is the kind of restaurant where the culture is one of family. It has a warmth that envelops you. That warmth comes from the staff. I asked about the herb in my dish and my server brought me some to take home because they grow it out back. How cool is that?
The other restaurant is in Canada, in Toronto to be exact. This restaurant takes service to a whole new level. If they don’t recognise you, they welcome you to the neighbourhood with open arms.
My first time there it was explained that on certain night I would need reservations and that I could also order take out. The second time I was greeted by name. Impressive for a restaurant in a very large city. The service is consistent and if you are a regular you will occasionally be treated with complimentary dishes of something you haven’t previously ordered or something that is new to the menu. And it works. A new mango dessert was brought to my table “on the house.” Not only did I feel special, I also took a picture of it and posted on social media. These people know what they are doing.
Neither restaurant makes big promises on their websites. Neither promises you will get in without a reservation (but you will if you are a regular). Both restaurants are so successful because they understand the importance of exceptional customer service.
This is not rocket science, this is about delivering consistent service, treating your customers with the respect they deserve and creating and maintaining relationships.
The results are a happy customer (me) and a thriving business (both are) due to word of mouth marketing, happy employee’s (that’s another blog post on the importance of happy employee’s), good food and consistent service that under promises and over delivers.
It’s a simple as that!
